German Shepherd Husky Mix: Temperament, Care Guide & Facts

Have you recently come across a wolf-like dog? Or did you just see this title and gain interest through total curiosity? Either way, today you are going to learn a little more about the German shepherd husky mix.

Now, you may already know that this site is all about golden retrievers. But for certain topics, I have to make an exception. When I see mixes like this, I just got to write about it. This was a very popular topic that was highly requested to discuss.

I set out to do some research and share my findings in this article.

It’s very interesting as this dog has been around for quite some time. But mostly in recent years, this has become a very more popular dog, especially with their new name too. However, I won’t spill all the beans just yet as I’ll save that for the rest of this post.

What breed are a German Shepherd and Husky mix?

The German shepherd and husky mix is a mixture of the commonly known intelligent German Shepherd with a Siberian Husky. Now you may find that these mixes come in different breeds.

You may be thinking what exactly am I talking about right? Well, what I’m actually referring to is the fact that you can find two types of commonly referred to husky mixes.

First of all, we had the Siberian husky which is the breed that is a lot more known to the public. On the other hand, you also have at the Alaskan husky which is a purebred husky.

Both are defined by its common use as a sled dog but in some cases, you may find that the Siberian is used for other causes. One typical example that I have come across time and time again is that they would assist us during the Siberian winter’s.

Let us talk about appearance and looks

Appearance-wise you’ll find that both dogs look very similar. Although when you look at the Siberian husky your notice that they have a bit of a thick of fur coat. Masters dogs May appear the same on the forefront there is definitely a huge you need difference when it comes to their speed.

The Alaskan husky is now commonly used in the current climate for racing events such as sled racing and much more. Honor for sprinters dogs can reach speeds over 19 miles per hour over a 3-day racing event.

Because of the events, they participate in. You will find some of them to be a lot more on the expensive side if you had any thoughts of buying one in the near future.

What is a Husky and German Shepard mix called?

With all these new hybrid dogs you will also find some hybrid or tech names to go with them. Trying to keep up with the different new breeds that are coming along in the mid-2000s is like trying to keep up with the latest iPhone.

It’s just not possible….Lucky for you there are people like me out here, that are writing about all of these dogs, to keep you updated on a regular basis.

In simple terms…I do all the hard work so you don’t have to. Anyways,  you will find that the new name for the German shepherd mix husky is often referred to as the Gerberian Shepsky

Are fancy names everything though?

Now, although they’ve got this new fancy name it does not mean to say that is dogs have recently just come around. I would say that it’s more the fact that they’ve recently become a lot more popular than what you would have found back in the days.

As with all of these new designer dogs, you will find that people are digging more and more into getting mixes than purebred dogs. I think it is more of preference if I were totally honest as there is no real benefit performance-wise over are commonly known, household friends.

More so I think it goes with the new revamped look of our modern high-tech lifestyles that we all love to live.

Don’t worry, I do this too!

I have to hold my hands up at this one as I can admit I’m completely the same. What’s that have currently a purebred golden retriever… If you were to do your research on a golden then you would know that they two were bred from the yellow retriever.

And tweed water spaniel which is now extinct. The mixers can go on forever and I assume that they will continue to do so for many more generations. The Gerberian Shepsky is just another name that’s been given to a modern-day popular dog.

When did the  German shepherd husky mix first come around?

There is no exact track record as to when these dogs first with bred. I’ve contacted multiple reputable breeders across the internet and have had no real success in finding out exactly when these dogs first came around.

I ended up resulting in my not so accurate old friend Google trends. Although, this cannot tell us exactly when the dog first came around.

We can, however, notice the trend in when the dog first became popular or commonly known. As you can see from the chart below,  list of mainly became popular in 2011. But results show that people were searching for this dog as far back as 2004.

Lets now look at the parent’s heritage

If we were to take a quick look at the parents then you would see that the German shepherd goes back as far as 1882. But only first was made public in 1908 when they were first recognized by the official American Kennel Club.

On the other hand, you have the Siberian husky that goes back as far as the early 1900s. And, was first made publicly recognized in 1930 by the American kennel club

We can only hope for now…

Maybe one day we’ll be able to find out exactly how far back they were actually bred. But going off the information that is found across the internet. I can safely say that it seems it was over 30 years + back in time. So now we’ve delved a little deeper into the track record of these dogs.

In the next part of this post, we will go on to look at the behavior of these dogs. And get stuck into a little bit more into some of the most common traits of these dogs too.

Saying that these dogs are well behaved and good would be an understatement. They are brilliant companions as well as build with lots of smarts and good looks.

Gerberian Shepskys are also very protective dogs so they are usually good to have around the family and children. Which is what also explains why they are commonly used for some of the services that we will discuss later on.

A well-behaved dog is still commonly expected to be a little mischievous. This is the general temperament that you will find inside of a mix of German shepherd and Siberian Husky.

I would say that this temperament is usually taken from the Siberian Husky. As although these dogs are very intelligent they can sometimes wander off. If the task is not interesting or stimulating enough for them to take part in, they will take off for a while and come back when they feel like it.

Let’s discuss how easy or difficult these dogs are actually to train. I’m sure you are waiting for that information if you have a cross-breed German shepherd husky. Or, if you’re just looking into some more info before making a purchase. I’ll promise to share all I got here on this post, so let’s get into it.

The most surprising part about this answer is the fact that there is no particular answer to the question.

Why?… Because it will all depend on the immediate parents. On one hand, you get Siberian huskies that are usually very mischievous and I’m willing to take on new tasks that they have no interest in.

And on the other, you have the German Shepherd that is super smart and willing to take on new challenging & difficult tasks.

The German shepherd husky mix is full of intelligence which also can work against them or you of when trying to train them. Let me elaborate on this a little bit more to explain further…

Problems with training

So the problem you could easily face would be the fact that they may have a mischevious side and feel they are not being challenged.

When the situation gets to this point, you would definitely know about it.

As they will show no interest and simply just walk off whilst you’re trying to provide the commands.

This is why it’s so important to start training from as young as possible. 8 Weeks is a good age to get started, so get hold of some materials and get going with your training!

What are some of the uses for Gerberian Shepsky?

If you had any assumptions that this still could be used for professional services then you would be writing in doing so. It’s not hard to tell that a dog with so much intelligence and bred from two very intelligent dogs would have a lot of useful assets we can benefit from.

Because of their incredible sense of smell and diligent attention to detail. You will find that these dogs are often used as search and rescue dogs, police dogs and also as guard dogs.

It all depends on what you’re looking for

There are multiple uses for this dog but as well as all of these users you will also find that they make great companions to. So do not be put off if you do not have these requirements as you could still have this dog as a nice household.

However, if you do decide to go down that route then I do advise you be a very active individual. Because they require a lot of activity and stimulating tasks.

You can expect to be walking them for around 2 hours per day as well as a total of 11 miles a week. Which for some people is not the best-suited length of time.

Whilst allowing your dog to walk in the yard can be great for most days, it’s also very important for you to take them out to actually get a real strengthening of the muscles throughout the day.

It may be a good idea to take up in your activity such as bike riding if it’s something that you haven’t been doing over the last few years. Next, we go into detail about how to how to train a German shepherd husky mix.

House Training

Just a quick look at the parents and you can tell that this dog is definitely built for some hard work. Although you will need to provide them with stimulating activities they are very good dogs to generally train.

With the right training, you can definitely reap the rewards depending on the uses you have for their abilities. Generally, these dogs are used for professional services, because of there talents and capabilities for attention to detail. To start off by train in this dog as a puppy we generally determined on what uses you have for them as an older adult.

To house training a german shepherd mix you got to have the right tools.

For this, I recommend you check out an expert course beforehand to get a clear insight as to what you’ll need to know. For example, if you are trying to create a service trained dog…Then, I would highly suggest you go to a professional dog training school.

Health Concerns

A few of the health concerns to be aware of when discussing a German shepherd husky mix are a few of the following:

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

This disease is commonly found in cats and is a genetic disorder that progressively reduces a lost in Vision. Eventually, The Subtle end to this disease can result in complete blindness.

Hip Dysplasia

I have to say this is the one thing that I find to be a problem for a majority of new mix-breed dogs. With golden retrievers, it holds a number two spot of the most common problem of course found with them in regards to their health.

Again with the German shepherd husky mix… This is a problem involving the hip displacement. Which requires an operation that currently has a very high success rate. It’s required that if dogs go through this experience you are essentially prepared.

That means having the correct equipment and bedding to provide for recovery.

This is a problem that will cause dogs to experience seizures over a lifelong period. Worse they are not many records of a lot of this breed experience in this.

From my research, I can see that the data has mainly been taken away from the parents of these dogs as these are some of the common problems that they have been through.

Next, we discuss our favorite topic which is all about they’re beautiful colored coats and exactly how you can take care of them. Get ready for lots of hair! As the Gerberian Shepsky is willing to share a lot of it.

Shedding & Grooming

This dog has a medium to long thick coat with a density that is more on the dense side. The hair is very straight which results in it coming out absolutely everywhere!

If you got a nice apartment or house and you are not looking for it to be covered then you may want to take some precautions before getting yourself this dog.

It’s almost guaranteed that you will experience a lot of hair as they shared a hell of a lot. It’s not hard to tell as the German Shepherd is also the same and requires around weekly grooming to maintain their healthy-looking coat.

You can find the color of the code to be in many different Appearances as I’ve seen a few of the following so far in my time:

  • Brown
  • Cream
  • White
  • Red
  • Blu
  • Black
  • Mixed of black and white

It doesn’t stop there.  as you will find with many mix breeds it is hard to define the opposite of what color they will be.

Colors of coats and eyes

Their eyes are the same too as you find some with blue and other with brown. And some circumstance, one dog with different colored eyes. Some will take one side of the parent’s genes whilst other dogs can take the other.

There’s no definite or definite answer to exactly what color they will be. So it’s just a guessing game up until that point. There are some jeans that are stronger than others just like we have ourselves.

But what about the size of these dogs? how big can you expect Gerberian Shepsky to actually be?

When we bring the males into the discussion, we are talking anywhere from the size of 20 to 25 inches tall. With a way that can get up to around 50 to 85lbs. On the other hand, we have the females which are not so heavy in weight but arrived at the same size of 20 to 25 inches tall.

All of the numbers to prove it, it is not hard to tell that you have a big dog on your hands. With all of the statistics under the belt, it’s now time to move on to where you can purchase one of these beautiful baby pups.

How to buy a German Shepherd Husky Mix

Does the German Shepherd mix husky make a good family dog?

This dog would definitely make a good family dog as they love being part of a pack and playing with children.

They are smart enough to know the younger ones that need to be protected and they take pride in protecting their parents. It’s also why they are commonly used as guard dogs as they got the ones that they love.

It’s not hard to tell that this is an amazing dog and definitely the one for you if you are looking for a smart intelligent, energetic, fun family pup. There is an eagerness of willing to learn from this breed with a protective personality that will guard you and your family.
