Husky pit mix: Temperament, Care Guide and Facts

the husky pit mix is the new phenomenon that has recently come about to attract a lot of eyeballs in the short amount of time they have been known.

Today ill be taking you through everything there is to know about this breed in hope that you can gain a little clarity on whether this is the dog for you!

What’s a pitsky?

A husky pit mix is a cross between an American pitbull and a Siberian Husky. Over the last few years, this particular breed of dog has become widely popular across the united states.

The Intro

Both parents are already popular in the public eye. It’s to no surprise that these cute little pups have become such a phenomenon.

There’s no doubt that Pitbulls are protected and you’ll never be short of that with this breed, which in some cases can be a little too fierce for some. That’s not to say that these dogs cant be a loving, caring family dog.

The other parent (Siberian husky)

On the other hand, you have the Siberian husky which is a very fun loving caring and energetic dog. These dogs came back from the times of the Siberian winters of where do Siberian Huskies were used to pull sleys with humans.

The same as the dogs usually see her around Christmas time inside of the movies…Yup you know the movies I’m talking about!

A look at both parents

From looking at both parents I can safely say that you can expect a lot of energy from this dog. And if trained in the right way that energy can be utilized in a very useful environment. That means lots of fun lots of games and lots of play all the time around the Clock.

However, it’s down to the parents to ensure that the energy is dispersed into the right activities. Next, well dive into the history behind this breed and go through when they first become known and where exactly they came from too.

The Backstory

The Pitbull Husky mix has been around from back in 2002 but first became well known and popular in 2014

This particular breed of dog is not purebred which is why it hasn’t yet been recognized by the American Kennel Club.

If you look at the majority of the new modern breeds, you’ll clearly see that this breed is nothing new on the block. There’s no particular accuracy into when these dogs first came around as breeders could have been breeding them from a long time ago.

Compared to a Goberian

It’s quite similar to the Goberian which is the Siberian husky Retriever mix. They’ve been around roughly for about 10 years of where I would also pop the Pitbull Husky mix if it was down to my own knowledge.

But again there are many breeders who could have been reading these dogs from a long time before that. I’m from looking at the statistics on Google Trends and you can see that people were searching for these dogs back in 2002.

A quick look at the parents

You may find that this breed takes to either parent’s appearance. Some have fury thick coats whilst others are short-haired with blue eyes and tall ears. A great way to determine the temperament of your puppy is to take a brief look at their parents.

As the saying goes “the apples don’t fall far from the tree” and that’s the truth for the most parts when it comes to dogs too.

It’s the only way to determine the potential behavior of your dog. You may find that some breeders recommend going off breed standard, but the problem with that it’s every dog is different. So, I find a quick look at the parents can give you a good insight as to what to expect.

Pitsky Appearance

As previously mentioned you can find his dog’s looking very different from dog to dog. They all have very unique colors in fur and also unique colors in eyes. Some of them may come with a mixture of two different colored eyes on one specific.

It is not been unusual to find a pitbull husky mix with one blue eye and one Brown.

This is why they are so unique in appearance as well as individuality in each specific job. Because there are so many different colors of decided to just give you a brief bullet-pointed list of the most commonly found colors found in a pitbull husky mix.

Here are the colors that I seem to find come up time and time again:

  • Black
  • Grey
  • Brown
  • Red
  • Cream
  • Fawn
  • Blue
  • Silver
  • White
  • Brindle

And if I were totally honest I wouldn’t say that this was all of the colors you can find. This is just kind of a category that you can put each color into.

Some of them or even have a mixture of two different colors on one job which can be quite interesting to see as well.

What about their coats?

So when we bring this topic into question, you will usually find that they have around a medium length coat with a medium density. It is been reported that they are quite genuinely easy to groom.

This is mainly because their hair is straight which can make it easy to comb through with brushes or combs. I’ve got lots of different information about the best tested Combs on another post on this website.

That post was mainly focused around golden retrievers and the other mixes of them. So, I’m sure you can find some useful information on the post if you’re looking for grooming information on a pitbull husky mix.

It’s highly recommended that you are grooming your husky pit mix every single day. They shed a lot of hair so it’s a great idea to do so.  You may also find on the odd occasion that some husky pit mixes have a long fur coat, due to their Siberian Husky parent having a long coat.

Research has shown me that you can expect a male pitbull husky mix to grow to anywhere between 17- 22 inches tall and a female to 16-21inches tall.

If we were to put this into a generic chart of dog sizing then it is safe to say that this is a medium to the large-sized dog.

The reason you may see such a vast range inside of each specific size for the male and the female. It’s mainly because they can either take the size of the larger Siberian husky or the smaller aesthetic Pitbull.

Appearance of parents

If we take a look at the appearance or size of the parents. You usually found a pitbull to have a very strong muscular look with a stern square head. In most appearances, they can come across to look very mean or aesthetically beautiful.

The Siberian Husky, on the other hand, is a more large dog with a lot of fear and resembles a wolf-like appearance.

Like mentioned before the easiest way to picture a Siberian Husky is to think back on the winter films you have seen in the past. Siberian Huskies are usually the dogs that are used for pulling snow sleys.

What about their weight?

You can expect a male Pitbull husky mix two way around 50 to 65 lbs. Where a female will weigh at just around 45 to 60 lbs.

The health of a pitbull husky mix

These dogs can live from anywhere between 12 – 15 years. As there are many common diseases that they are prone to. This can either shorten or extend for any given dog. Let’s dig into a little more on health!

This is when your dog has a high production of the thyroid hormone which is used to keep a good balance for their diet and hunger.

This constant state will result in metabolic hyperactivity. A way to notice this is by seeing a dog constantly hungry and eating a lot but gaining no weight or losing weight.

Hip Dysplasia

This is another commonly found problem in many types of our day and age. Hip dysplasia is wearing your dogs hip joint becomes displaced which is commonly found in Golden Retrievers.

Symptoms of this will include limping or discomfort when attempting to raise from the ground to sit down. Unfortunately, it is a problem that many dogs suffer from and you can read more about that on another post on this site.

How much does a Pitsky cost to buy?

You can expect to pay between $500 and $2,000 for a pitbull husky mix. This does not include the cost of other expenses such as food & grooming. Always make sure that when you purchase a new dog that they have already had their jobs as a puppy.

You’ll also want to know that they haven’t been taken away from their parents before the age of 8 weeks. Just to make sure that your dog doesn’t suffer from separation anxiety or loneliness of any kind.

The cost of a bad decision

The cost can be something that isn’t measured in money as you may end up with a badly behaved pup. So always do your research and due diligence to find out exactly whether the breather is credible or not.

If you decide to go down the route of paying less than average for the dog then there’s usually a catch. It’s your job to figure out what that caches and make sure that you’re not opening a can of worms.

Where can you buy a pit husky?

There are many different sites that you can find on the Internet of where you can buy a pitbull husky mix. Some of the sites can include:

  • The Happy Puppy Website
  • Gumtree
  • Dog Breed Plus

Make sure to be careful when buying from these type of sites. If you do then ensure you know your stuff before meeting up or exchanging money for a pet etc.

Buying from a reputable dog breeder

The American Kennel Club official website to see the breeders they recommend. On the official website, you will be able to find the licensed recommend dog breeders, of where you can get a pitbull Retriever mix.

However, you will and should expect to pay more for this as you are going to be dealing with reputable dog breeders. But as the old saying goes… you get what you pay for in life.

And when you add up all of the things that can go wrong from getting the wrong dog. Then I’m sure it’s worth the money to just use a reputable company where you can return it there were to be any problems.

What is a Pitbull mixed with a husky called exactly?

Across the internet, there are three main aims that I seem to find popping up time and time again for the specific breed of dog. The first one being the term. You may have heard be used throughout this post previously which is the ‘Pitsky’.

As of now, I am still not absolutely sure this is an official name for this breed of dog. But it is the commonly used one across the internet that you will find on many of the dog breeding websites.

There’s not just one name for them as there’s also these

Now as you may know there is not just one type of husky. As we do have the Siberian husky and another common husky which is the Alaskan husky.

Both are very similar in appearance and close in the family, but clearly identified as two different dogs. So the other names you can find for a pitbull husky mix are also the following:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier/Siberian Husky
  • American Pit Bull Terrier/Alaskan Husky

Was there are no wrong or right names, they are just many different ones. So it’s super important for you to be familiar with all of them, so you have no problem when looking for information about one.

Husky pit mix characteristics

Some of the character traits of the husky pit mix involve very high energy,  friendly, loving and caring dog. If you take a look at both of the parents, they’re both highly committed to loving their parents.

Pit bulls are notorious for being highly protective over their parents, which can be used in the wrong way in some cases (if you knows what I mean).

You will find that it can be quite difficult to train a Husky pit mix as they have the tendency to want to run off if left alone.

The Siberian Husky behavior

From looking at the traits of the Siberian Husky. They are very good learner’s but sometimes do not want to implement the knowledge they retain. You may find that this dog simply doesn’t follow instructions and wants to do things on their own terms in their own time.

Like with most puppies it’s highly recommended that you start training these dogs from as young as 8 weeks old. You’ll later thank yourself down the road for doing it! There are many online training courses that allow you to train your dog from the comfort of your home. I recommend brain training for dogs as a great place to start, you can check out my complete review of the program for more details.

In the following section, you can find information on the current training course that I recommend.

How to train a husky pit mix

Hands down it goes without saying that you’re going to have to take part in obedience training with this particular dog. Because of how much energy this dog has it is important to Channel their energy into the right activity.

Obedience training will be a perfect fit for this as it will allow them to take part in activities whilst also becoming obedient. This will establish you as the Superior Force of where they will not challenge your instructions or question your authority in the future.

How does a Husky Pitbull mix behave around kids?

These dogs are great for the family because they are very loving caring and friendly. Pitsky’s make good pets for families that are very highly active and outdoors. If you have a family home with a large garden then this will be a good choice for you.

These dogs are very comfortable around children and understand that protecting the younger is essential.

The danger does not come from these dogs around your own family but more around the fact of if someone is trying to harm you. They are highly protective around their parents and their loyalty lays with you.

Is a husky pit mix a good dog to easily form a bond with?

Absolutely,  this dog will be a great dog for forming a bond. As they are highly committed to pleasing in their parents. Everything they live for involves a family-oriented view. Which makes forming a bond almost an understatement.

If you’re looking for a fun, friendly, high activity dog, then a Pitsky is definitely the choice for you. These dogs are very committed to loving and caring for their parents.

This would make a great family dog with the right training. For more on how to get hold of this dog then check out my post on buying a mixed breed.
