Can You Use Baby Shampoo On Dogs?

Ive been there! Wether its last minute trip to the store or simply waiting till pay day, finding an alternative will prove to be helpful in a time of need. Question is;

Can you use human shampoo on dogs?

The short answer is yes. I did some reading and it turns out, you can use baby shampoo on canines. Baby shampoo is created with a similar pH to dog shampoo because baby skin is sensitive with a more alkaline and less acidic pH, not unlike the pH that canines have. By reading this article you will learn about how your fur-child’s skin is different from an adult human being’s skin but quite similar to a human baby’s.

Babies have a neutral pH for their skin, which is similar to the canine alkaline pH level of between seven and eight.

On the other hand, adult skin has an acidic pH level of around 5.5. Thus, adult human shampoos will not be suitable for dogs or babies and may cause irritation and dryness.

Here is a list of baby shampoos that work on dogs:

  • Burt’s Bees Baby Shampoo And Wash
  • Jhonson’s Baby Shampoo
  • Aveeno Baby Shampoo
  • Aquaphor Baby Wash And Shampoo
  • Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Baby Liquid Soap

What Difference is there Between Canine and Human Skin?

Dog skin is quite different from human skin. Human skin has a more acidic pH level of around 5.5 while canine skin has a slightly more alkaline pH level of around 7-8. This is why shampoo for dogs needs to be formulated with a balanced pH to prevent their skin from itching or drying out.

Like dogs, babies have a more neutral pH which later becomes more acidic.

This is why babies need special shampoo as well. Canine skin has an epidermis rate of turnover every twenty days while human skin turns over every twenty-eight days. Human skin is about ten to fifteen cells thick while dog skin is just three to five cells thick.

This is why damage to the fragile skin of your pooch could lead to inflammation, irritation, and infections. It also means that skin products for humans and human shampoos will be too harsh even for your fiercest pooch.

How to identify a good dog shampoo

To identify a good shampoo for your dog, there are a few factors to consider. First, check the age of your dog. If you have a puppy find a specifically designed shampoo made for puppies.

Typically dog shampoos are gentler and made with a tear-free formula that won’t hurt your puppy’s eyes. Next, check to see if your dog is prone to ticks and fleas. Find a tick and flea product designed to fend off ticks, fleas, and other parasites.

Tick and flea shampoo can offer short-term protection. It is important to supplement other measures for ticks and fleas for total prevention.

Your dog’s skin condition also matters. If your dog has flaky, itchy, or dry skin, moisturizing shampoo is the product to get. Avoid chemical-containing scented shampoos that can irritate your dog’s skin further.

Instead, opt for a shampoo with natural ingredients such as vitamin E, honey, and oatmeal. If the condition of your dog gets worse, becomes red and bumpy or dry and flaky, ask your vet about a medicated treatment shampoo for what he has.

A lusterless, dull coat can be from a bad diet or health failure. Restore a nice shine on your dog with a shampoo that nourishes your dog’s fur packed with proteins, vitamins, and minerals.

If your dog has a way of finding his way into mystery substances in the garbage, he or she will tend to be a stinky dog. You will need a deodorizing shampoo that eliminated bad odors rather than just covering it up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Baby Shampoo kill fleas on dogs?

Johnson’s Baby Shampoo does work to kill fleas on my dog. Last week we had a bad flea outbreak and out of desperation, I squeezed out a bit of baby shampoo by Johnson’s on my dog’s rump, neck, and head.
Amazingly, after working up a good lather, I saw dead fleas just dropping like flies everywhere.

Can you use baby wipes on a puppy?

Baby wipes are safe for babies and yes, you can use them on your puppy, as well. However, make sure you don’t get any of the liquid from the wipes near your puppy’s eyes. If you see any irritation or a rash anywhere on your puppy after using a certain brand of wipes, stop using this brand immediately and take your pup to see a vet.

How Often Should I Shampoo My Dog?

Depending on your dog’s breed and individual sensitivity of their skin as well as the product you use for cleaning your dog. Every four to eight weeks is a good rule of thumb if you use pet-specific products.

Of course, there is no specific science that applies to every pet pooch. If your dog loves the outdoors, you can wash your dog as frequently as once per week. Washing your dog too often can cause irritation so use gentle products meant for canines exclusively.

Does hemp shampoo for dogs such as this one with a link have any real benefits?

Hemp oil does provide natural wellness for your fur child. Hemp shampoo helps maintain the skin of your dogs and helps clarify the skin of your pet.

If your pooch has inflamed skin and is constantly scratching, this could cause excessive shedding. Hemp shampoo helps soothe skin that has become irritated from other products.

Having my own fur-kids has forced me to do extensive research on what actually works and what does not. With all the different products on the market, how do we actually know what works?

I have tested these products on my own set of pooches and I have to tell you, am quite happy with the results. That is why I have no qualms recommending any of these great products to you.
