Our Overall #1 Rated Pick

Updated On May 16, 2022

Our top choice is the NBJU bark collar because it offers the best price, sizing, and functionality.

The collar works in a sequence that responds with an accurate level of stimulation against the consistency of unwanted behaviors. It first starts with a beep, but if the behavior continues it increases to a vibrate and then to static shock as the most intense.

The device comes with two silicone sleeves to cover the prongs and has 7 sensitivity levels for varying levels of correction.

What’s more, is that the battery will give you a full charge in 30 minutes which lasts up 12 days. Even the professional design comes as a great addition to this effective training tool that is also manufactured for a comfortable fit.

What is a Shock Collar For Chihuahuas?

A shock collar for small breeds like Chihuahuas could be either a shock collar or bark collar.

Shock collars are designed with 3 common training modes that consist of ‘beep’, ‘vibrate’, and ‘static’ corrections.

The key benefit to using a shock collar is that it can be paired with accommodating such as tracking or timers and provide the trainer with complete control via a handle remote device (i.e. the transmitter).

Bark collars on the other hand operate automatically by detecting the vibration of the vocal cords on a dog to administer a low-level beep, vibrate or shock without the need for manual controls.

Both have their benefits, although I have noticed that bark collars commonly offer smaller sizing for toy, teacup and small breeds.

How Do Shock Collars For Chihuahuas work?

Shock collars are not the same as anti-bark collars. Shock collars are typically controlled by a remote, with variable settings. When an undesired behavior is exhibited like snapping or barking, you’ll have to trigger the correction from the remote.

The correction can be delivered through an audio beep, vibration, or shock. The “shock” is more like a static stimulation or a “tap,” and it isn’t meant to hurt your four-legged companion.

However, Chihuahuas are small dogs with sensitive necks, so use only the lowest intensity setting and if possible, choose from other non-shock corrections like vibrations or sound.

An anti-bark collar detects vibrations when your Chihuahua starts barking and automatically delivers the correction by also a beep, vibration, or shock.

Many anti-bark collars come with no-shock mode which can be dangerous when left on automatic settings that correct every time a dog barks.

What Should You Look For In A high-Quality Shock Collar For Chihuahuas?

Below are what I believe to be the most important qualities to look out for when buying a shock collar for Chihuahuas.

Size

With a dog that has an average neck size of around 8-13″, it’s surely a good idea to consider the size of the device you are buying.

Range

‘Range’ is a quality to look out for when buying a training device for any breed, as you’ll need to quantify the distance of your intended training area to gauge the number of yards the device will need to cover.

And with a Chiuhua only being able to cover short distances when running, a 100-yard coverage is likely a good place to start.

Stimulus type

Beep and vibration modes in most cases will be enough to train a Chihuahua. And bark collars are brilliant for this.

But if you choose to go with a shock collar then consider a device that features “no shock mode” as this will likely provide enough stimulation for a Chihuahua to perform a task.

Muti-Level intensity

Multi-level intensity will provide you with varying levels of stimulation that can be appropriately adjusted to match your training style. The more levels, the better!

This function is usually only applied to vibration modes and static correction modes and should be used on the lowest possible settings when a dog is performing the intended task.

Pick #1: NBJU Bark Collar For Dogs

The NBJU Bark collar is the perfect choice for pet parents looking for a set and forget-style correctional collar.

This product does great in distinguishing unwanted behaviors against random outdoor noises that help in avoiding accidental corrections.

A single charge of 30 minutes can last up to 12 days and comes with 7 levels of intensity you can adjust to. It also has a sleek design, and simple-to-use buttons, and provides a great fit for small dogs like Chihuahuas.

It’s important to note, that you can set this device to shock or no shock depending on the style of training you prefer.

Pick #2: Dog Rook Dog Bark Collar

The one stand-out feature of this product is that it effectively corrects bad dog behaviors, fast. Read reviews and see what others say as this collar is effective in improving behavior within just a matter of days.

Although not technically a shock collar, this anti-bark collar is a kinder choice, especially for small, sensitive Chihuahuas.

The DogRook bark collar divides sounds and vibrations into five stages. When your Chihuahua barks, the collar activates itself and delivers an audio correction. If the barking continues, then a beep sound will continue which then progresses to vibrations.

The collar operates in an autonomous mode that uses a combination of sounds and vibrations to successfully and safely halt barking.

A full charge will take 2 to 3 hours and can last for up to 14 days afterward. every order also includes prong covers (for protecting skin), a USB charging cable, and a nylon strap providing you with the best possible build quality.

Pros

Cons

Pick #3: Trulrox Rechargeable No Bark collar

The Trulrox No Bark Collar is one of the few self-activating collars on the market that offers sound-only and no-harm vibration modes.

With reflective stitching, this rechargeable E collar can be adjusted down to a size of 3.7 inches, making it suitable for even the tiniest Chihuahuas.

The product is lightweight and weighs just 50g with a 400mAh battery that fully charges within 3 hours to provide an estimated 10 days of usage.

Rest assured that rainwater and swimming will be safe and damage-free, as the device is IP67 waterproof which means the product has been tested under 15cm of water for a 30-minute period.

Each of the two training modes differs by mode of shock and no shock. As one of the settings contains beep, vibration, and shock, while the other has beep and vibration alone.

The product has also been manufactured to prevent overcorrections, so when multiple corrections are made within 1 minute, the collar will stop for a period of 2 minutes.

Cons

Pick #4: PetPNR Dog Training Collar with Remote

With a range of up to 546 yards, this collar can deliver 15 varying levels of stimulation through sound and vibrational correction.

The remote transmitter can be paired with three dog collars at once that have battery lives of around 20 days, while the remote provides up to 40 days of standby time.

In most cases, the beep function alone will be enough to stop a Chihuahuas yapping, but if you find yourself needing more power, then vibration and shock modes are also available.

This adjustable collar will fit all but the littlest Chihuahuas. If you program the intensity level to 0, this collar will only deliver a sound and vibration correction, effectively putting the collar into no-shock mode.

Pros

Cons

Pick #5: eXuby Tiny shock collar

This tiny shock collar is the perfect option for small breed dogs like Chihuahuas. In fact, it offers sizes for dogs that weigh 5 – 15lbs (i.e. small and miniature breeds).

The product has short and long prongs included for dogs that have short and long hair, a fast-charging plug that charges in just 2 hours for 24 hours of training, and a split cable that’s perfect for charging the remote and collar at the same time.

Our reason for placing this product last is down to the fact that many customers have reported the product to stop working after just 2 months of use.

Specifically, it has been reported that the collar itself will not hold a charge when the product has been used for more than a 2 month period.

Pros

Cons

How do I stop my Chihuahua from roaming?

Using an invisible fence or typical fence around your large property can help keep your Chihuahua from roaming and pursuing predators too far away from your property in some circumstances.

Try to use reward-based training first, failing which, you can use an e-collar that will buzz or beep when the property boundary is crossed.

Do shock collars work on Chihuahuas?

Chihuahuas are tiny dogs with sensitive necks. Before using static stimulation, try to use sound and vibration corrections instead, only escalating to the shock when the behavior is stubbornly not corrected.

Chihuahuas are also very barky dogs that might benefit from the use of an automatic bark collar that corrects when they are yapping.

How do You keep Chihuahuas on A property?

Chihuahuas are curious, exploratory dogs that often wander off. However, because of their diminutive size, they are a danger to themselves when they do.

They could get into trouble with traffic, or get into fights with bigger dogs. To keep your Chihuahua on the property (and safe!), you can use the vibration mode on a shock collar to deliver a correction when your Chihuahua crosses the invisible line and leaves the property.

Are shock collars safe for Chihuahuas?

Chihuahuas can be stubborn dogs, yet they have fragile, sensitive necks. Before going on to a shock, try other correction methods such as using sound and vibration.

While methods like shock collars are safe for Chihuahuas to improve its behavior, research has shown that positive, reward-based training is safer and more successful. Only use the shock as the last resort when all other methods have failed.

Conclusion

Finding the perfect shock collar for a Chihuahua can be done in a few simple steps. Ensure the collar is small enough to adjust down to an 8″ neck size, try to find collars that include no shock mode, and look out for automatic features, as that can be helpful in setting and forgetting the training.
