If your anything like me then you may be looking for a home remedy for your dog’s eye treatment instead of another expensive trip to the vets. Trying to find the best treatment can be a pain in the butt and also very heavy on the purse too.
I decided to take a different approach when I was faced with this problem. I am a strong believer in natural healing remedies as its what I use for myself.
And so I set out to find different remedies that I could find to solve the problem. From doing so I also need to learn the best way to determine how serious infections are too.
In this post, I will share everything that I found as well as the tips that I gathered up to help you too. So let’s get into the first section of where I explain how you should be identifying the problem.
Identifying the problem
First things first and that means identifying exactly what your dog has and whether it’s really an eye infection. There is absolutely no need to make this a long stretch of writing as it is very easy to know if your dog is experiencing something in the eye.
If you notice a slight irritation then you should investigate further to check visual appearance. Upon checking if you find anything unusual such as building, redness, boogers or swelling then you know there is something wrong.
Depending on what you see will determine whether you need to call a vet immediately or attempt a home remedy yourself. But first, let’s discuss why dogs get these problems in the first place.
Why do dogs get these problems?
Because dogs are outdoor animals they are susceptible to different types of bacteria entering the body. Eye infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and sometimes allergic reactions or irritants.
Naturally, as dogs spend the majority of their time outdoors, they a more prone to picking up these bacterias more often than not. There’s no real way to avoid this happening but all you can do identify it as soon as possible whilst exploring the best potential solutions.
Assessing how serious it is
Now when you look across the internet you’re going to find lots of different information on this topic. Some experts prefer you not to even determine how serious the problem is and immediately contact it.
That would be totally your choice if you choose to do so and if you do choose to do it you will not be wrong in doing it. However, for those of you who think you have the guts to just assess it yourself then this article is for you.
You don’t have to make this a difficult job. If you take a look you will easily be able to see whether this problem is severe or not. I agree this could be a severe situation that you are just spotting in the earlier stages. But if this is the case then you can still, later on, make a trip to the vets.
Sophie of the things you want to look out for are the following:
- Bulging eye
- Pupils of eyes of different sizes.
- The appearance of vessels in the white of the eye.
- Redness of the eye.Fluttering eyelids
- Tearing in the eyelid
- Dented eye (a potential ulcer on the eye)
What to do if you see the above
If you see any of the above then you should immediately contact your vet. The above-mentioned symptoms are all elements of glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye infection disease that should be treated by a professional immediately.
If however, you see any of these on a very mild aspect then you may potentially be able to treat it with a home remedy. So when we discussed topics such as redness of the eye it is your job to assess how red their eyes are.
If you find that it’s very light red then this could be just due to some irritation of the eye area. Nine times out of ten it’s best to first just washed their eye and see if you can visually see anything blocking the area.
Dogs commonly find themselves stuck with things in their eyes from playing outside in the outdoor areas. Amongst many, there are a few common causes for dogs experiencing eye infections.
Common causes for eye infection in dogs
Bacteria – this can enter the eye directly or in some cases from the skin to the eye. If your dog comes into contact with a bacteria on their skin then it can still alter make its way into their eye after.
This can develop from the wrong foods or environment such as pollens from a plant. This is a common way that you may find your dog’s eye resulting in a very red outbreak which can result in infection.
This is a condition of the eye of where your dog may not be producing enough tears to lubricate the area. This will then result in irritation which can then lead to symptoms of the eye becoming red and inflamed.
In bad cases, this could result in conjunctivitis of where your dog’s eyes may be glued shut in the morning because of a lack of tears being produced. Depending on how old your dog is will depend on what actions you may decide to take.
Eye infections in puppies
The best advice I can provide you when it comes to puppies is to immediately contact a professional. Because puppies are still very little they are liable to many other things going wrong from when is she being formed.
This is definitely something on the smaller end of the scale when we talk in regards to severity.
But it is still heavily advised that you get this sorted as soon as possible instead of letting it linger on or trying to use home remedies on such a small individual.
If you find yourself trying to look for home remedies on puppies then I suggest you go and read a different article. In the following part of this post, I will discuss the potential treatments you can use these home remedies for adult dogs.
Once you have determined how serious the symptoms are you can then suggest a possible solution. So as you came to this post for home remedies that is exactly the option I will provide you.
Dog eye infections are possibly treated with home remedies in certain scenarios. It’s important for you to rule out any potentially serious problems before you decide to do this.
Conjunctivitis and other common symptoms are possible for you to treat from the comfort of your home. A few of the remedies that you can use are the following:
What I love most about this product is the fact that it is made with 100% natural oils. It has a very unusual smell I must warn you but it does what it says on the tin. Get it on Amazon
This product is for those who are looking for a natural remedy with no side effects.
Primo pup eyewash:
This is an eyewash that has been designed to help with washing the eye area of your dog for very mild infections. It should be used with cotton balls and dabbed around the affected area to remove any debris or dirt in the eye.
I usually advise using this after you have treated the eye with some drops for some time prior to using this product. Get it here.
Pet MD Chlorhexidine Wipes:
I would also highly recommend that you get yourself some wipes too. This will help to maintain treatment from home and provide a good solution to tissue or cloth throughout the day. You can see more details on this product over on Amazon here.
Preventing eye infections
There is no absolute way of preventing your dog from training eye infections. You can do your best to prevent it if you have the following but it is highly unlikely that you can stop this from happening.
To ensure that you keep your dog’s eyes bright and healthy you should attempt to keep her out of their eyes at any given time. Also, avoid using shampoos in their eyes and any type of irritants that could potentially cause any harm.
This includes free medicines, soaps, and any other products that might cause any irritation around the eye area. Although you may find a lot of products are claimed as tear-free I still would recommend highly that you do not use this on your dog’s eyes.
You may find that dog eye infection home remedy is a good option for your dog although…It is important for you to understand exactly when this is suitable as the solution to the problem.
By understanding exactly how severe the problem is you can then better determine the possible solution afterward. Home remedies are a great solution to fix conjunctivitis and mild eye irritations. If you find that your dog is experiencing some severe cases of eye problems then I suggest you contact a professional immediately.
